encamped

In the ambulance ride
With my son in the back
Victim to his own behavior

In the emergency room
As the doctor tells him
That he can ask me to step out

In the hard narrow couch
Trying to rest beside him
So many weary nights

In the magic of his eyes
Glittering, dancing
As he holds his first ribbon

In the little boy laugh
As he dives in the creek
And swims to the other side

In the tilt of his head
As he sees my strain
And reaches to give me a hug

In the quiet shelter
Between a boy and his dog
As their hearts beat together

In the one calls, one calls, one calls
To tell or reveal
Or disclose or alert

In the breathlessness of it all
Waiting - anxious - hoping
That the story isn’t finished

And knowing
That the angel of the LORD has
Circled us, surrounded us, protected us

In the hard love
The pain
The sorrow

The confident, reckless, unknown journey
Of believing our King is with us,
Come what may

And this, for me, is enough

The angel of the LORD encamps all around those who fear Him, and delivers them.

Psalm 34:7
